They said she was armed.
They said she was dangerous.
They were right.
Petty Moshen spent eighteen years of her life as a prisoner in her own home, training with military precision for everything, ready for anything. She can disarm, dismember, and kill—and now, for the first time ever, she is free.
Her paranoid father is dead, his extreme dominance and rules a thing of the past, but his influence remains as strong as ever. When his final will reveals a future more terrible than her captive past, Petty knows she must escape—by whatever means necessary.
But when Petty learns the truth behind her father's madness—and her own family—the reality is worse than anything she could have imagined. On the road and in over her head, Petty's fight for her life has just begun.
Fans of female-powered thrillers will love debut author LS Hawker and her suspenseful tale of a young woman on the run for her future…and from the nightmares of her past.

LS Hawker...a new author to me...Thank you.The GOOD: PLOT, A+++ VERY original. I cannot say how wonderful it is to read a novel...romance, YA, mystery, crime horror or any other genre that has a plot with twists and turns rather than the same old plot-line with different characters. For this alone, I offer my gratitude, a curtsy, continued success and good writing juju. Sadly, it has become a true necessity to also thank your editor for being phenomenal! With the advent of self-publishing, I've had to discard books that appear to have never been eyeballed by an editor. Not the case here! OUTSTANDING JOB Madam Editor! Ty! (BTW...despite my pet peeve about editing, I will NOT be editing my review... Wink!). Great characters and character arcs. Additionally, the characters were absolutely true to life. So well developed I felt like they were a part of my life. I TRULY was captured from page 1 and continued to be until "THE END". (The brilliant...a female lead, Petty, who is BADA*** and the male lead Dekker, who is whiney, graceless and nearly useless at defending himself, let alone Petty! What a phenomenal flip from the Alpha male/needy female and with a realistic reason WHY this works!)
THE BAD: hmmm.....oh yes....I wanted to finish " The Drowning Game" in one sitting, but I didn't think my heart could take it (and I was tired).
THE UGLY: Likely this unedited review! Nothing in the story as far as technical issues, though I generally figured out twists JUST before I read them...but I'm brilliant, so no fault to LS Hawker...lol. Seriously, the only UGLY would be the characters meant to be UGLY...and there are more than a few!

The Drowning Game A Novel edition by LS Hawker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Petty has been held captive by her father for years and when he dies of a heart attack, she bounces between mourning and rejoicing. She is at a loss as to what to do. The stipulations in her father's will soon decide the matter for her. She runs, armed and dangerous, pursuing answers to her many questions about why her father controlled her every move and who her family really is. She is pursued by her father's only friend, a militia nut, and the police.
From that moment on, the chase is tense and heart rending. Not only must Petty remain free (and alive) but she must navigate a world she has only seen on reruns on TV. The real world is much more unpredictable and cruel. And dangerously beautiful.
Hawker does a great job giving us insight into Petty's struggle (internal and external) while keeping the pages turning as if blown by a fan motor. The twists and turns surprise and delight. Petty is both tender and terrifyingly tough. Dekker, her unwilling companion, seems to need to hold her and hold a gun on her. Despite all this, Petty charges ahead into an inevitable collision with her past.
But this is not only a well written chase story with high stakes. It is a parable about life fifteen years into our fear riddled century. Petty has been convinced that the only response to life is fear and to arm against it. So too are many of us who watch the news or listen to politicians. Fear locks us in every night. We are succored on a false view of life that keeps us worrying about lies and/or things that are opposite from what we've been told. Today's parents especially are warned that every stranger is danger, that many foods are poison, and that life outside the house is risky at best. In many ways we are Petty. And like her we need to find the truth no matter how dangerous.
After the first three pages I almost stopped reading. By the 12th page I was hooked. So glad I finished the book. It had suspense, romance,
family crises, family caring and very descriptive emotional results of the treatment of the main character. Loved the ending.
This has to be one of the best debut novels I've ever, and I read a LOT of books! The plot was totally unique, the characters were deeply drawn and engaging, and the dialogue compellingly real. I won't reiterate the story line, as many reviewers have already done that, so I'll just say that I was hooked from page one and had a hard time putting the book down when I needed to. You know just one more chapter. I wasn't expecting much when I bought this, I've read a lot of these books by newly hatched e-book writers (hey, they're usually cheap!), and most of them have left a lot to be desired awkward writing, trite plot, stilted dialogue, poor proofreading or all of the above. The Drowning Game has none of those problems. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. I just finished this book and have pre-ordered LS Hawker's next book and can't wait to read it - luckily, it's release date is only an hour away! Highly recommend.
Petty's father dies and, for the first time in her 18 year old unconventional life, Petty is alone miles from anywhere and anyone, in a remote part of Kansas. Finally she can live the "normal" life she has always dreamed of and planned for. However dreams can be thwarted, even by the dead.
This fast paced thriller follows Petty, over a short timeline, as she tries to escape the future her father has planned for her, outrun the police and various others out to get her, and find out why her father brought her up in the way he did. The few main characters come to life as Petty uses all her wits, and father's training, to try to survive and discover the truth about herself and her family.
I loved this book. I found it exciting and gripping, plus it has some interesting psychological angles. I was totally involved with the main characters, and enjoyed the cliff hangers many chapters ended with. No question that is a 5* rating from me, because of the enjoyment and entertainment value of the book.
