Fair Margaret is historical fiction set in the very late 1400s. Henry VII is on the throne in England after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, ending the War of the Roses. Ferdinand II and Isabella I are on the throne in Spain, but Moors still have a stronghold in Granada. The Inquisition is a terrible presence in Spain with its influence extending to England, and the new world is yet to be discovered. Margaret Castell is the beautiful twenty-six-year-old daughter and only child of John Castell, a wealthy London merchant and trader who is reputed to be one of the richest men in England. Other members of John Castell’s household are Peter Brome, thirty years old, a man of military bearing and background but merchant duties and dress who lost his lands and claim to nobility by being on the losing side at Bosworth; and Betty Dene, a cousin of Margaret and a distant connection of Peter. Betty, also beautiful and within a year of Margaret’s age has claims to noble blood but is dependent upon John Castell. Other key characters are Senor d’Aguilar, who is the Marquis of Morella in Spain and the bastard son of Ferdinand’s brother by a Moorish princess; Ferdinand and Isabella, themselves; Fray Henriques, a Spanish priest who longs for wealth and place and better serves his lust for gold rather than god; and Inez, a highly-placed member of Morella’s household in Granada. The story is a swash-buckling adventure, with good descriptions of the times. Actions extends from London, to the high seas, to the Moorish enclave of Granada, to the royal court in Seville, ending back in the peaceful countryside of England. The tale is narrated in third person, and there are no mystical or supernatural elements in the story. There is a lot of adventure and humor combined with suspense and danger. In the end good triumphs over evil. It’s a good story, well presented. I enjoyed it very much.Product details

Fair Margaret Henry Rider Haggard 9781294312000 Books Reviews
I ordered this for a friends kindle. She must have liked it as she is an avid reader and I've not heard otherwise. There are many kindle free editions of books and its nice, in this economy, to have access to reading material that is free. Thanks, , for this service..
The story is a good one. I like this author, but in this print edition the type is so small that I have difficulty reading it. It makes for very tedious and tiresome reading which is a shame since it is a good book. Find another edition if you can.
